No matter if you are a seasoned dieter or someone who just wants to lose a few extra pounds, you have probably found yourself asking

“Why Am I Not Losing Weight?”

After all, you think you’re doing everything right, and still, you can’t lose the excess weight. If you find yourself caught in weight loss purgatory, you might suffer from one or more of the twelve problems that keep people from losing weight.

1. You’re Not Doing Strength Training

Lots of people don’t realize that adding strength training to their exercise routines can help them lose weight .  You’ll burn more calories and fat, even when you’re resting.  Just do two thirty-minute sessions of strength training each week and you should start losing some weight.

2. You’re Low on Calcium

Calcium is a powerful weight loss tool, especially when it comes to getting rid of those extra pounds around the midsection.   Include calcium rich foods in your diet so you can start burning more calories and losing weightMake sure you exercise portion control when you add these foods into your diet, though.  You don’t want to overdo it, or your caloric intake will be too high, and you’ll still have problems fighting the battle of the bulge.

3. You’re Addicted to Salads

When people go on diets, they often load up on salad because they think they are great for diets.  Unfortunately, most salads contain dressing and ingredients that are high in fat and calories. That’s not to say that you can’t have a healthy salad. You can have a healthy salad as long as you use fat free cheese, light dressing and egg whites.  Also, dip your salad in the dressing instead of smothering it so you eat less and take in fewer calories.

4. Your Food Comes in a Box

If your lunch or dinner comes from a box, chances are it’s high in sodium and preservatives.  That makes it hard to lose weight. Cook fresh foods and you will notice a difference in your weight loss.  You might have to spend a little extra time in the kitchen, but it will be well worth it when you step on the scale.

5. You’re Eating Three Meals a Day

You were brought up to eat three meals a day, but this can actually make it difficult to lose weight.  Instead of eating three meals, eat five small meals. That way, your metabolism will continue to work and burn calories throughout the day.  Additionally, you will have fewer hunger pangs, which will make it much easier to lose weight.

6. You Have a Medical Issue

Sometimes, weight loss issues stem from medical problems.  You could have:

  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Thyroid issues
  • Pituitary abnormalities
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • Heart disease

7. You’re Drinking Your Calories

Do you crave your regular soda, sweet tea or juice? Maybe you like to have a nice beer after work or a margarita with the girls every week.  All of these drinks can contribute to problems on the scale.  Replace these high calorie drinks with water and watch the pounds melt off your frame.

8. You’re Not Aware of the Amount of Food You’re Eating

It’s amazing how much people eat without even realizing it.  Maybe you go for that second slice of pizza without a second thought, or you eat a steak that is ten ounces instead of six.  These extras can add up to additional pounds on the scale.  Keep a food journal so you know how much you are eating. Then, you can find ways to cut back.

9. You’re Doing the Wrong Exercises

Do you prefer riding a bike to taking a walk?  Do you love to go to the gym to swim in the pool but avoid the aerobics class like the plague? These decisions can affect you on the scale.  Swimming and cycling don’t put much gravitational stress on the muscles, so they burn fewer calories than walking or aerobics.  Do swimming and cycling, but also put on your exercise shoes and go on a brisk walk or join a local aerobics class. Your scale will thank you.

10. You Think a Calorie is a Calorie

The body processes different foods differently.  Thus, a 100-calorie cookie is not the same as a 100-calorie apple.  Stick with foods that are high in protein, vitamins and nutrients, and avoid foods that are heavy in carbs and fat. You can still eat the same number of calories, but you will lose more weight.  Plus, you’ll feel better.

11. You’re Not Eating Enough

You have to get enough calories into your body, or your metabolism will slow down. Once your metabolism slows down, it’s hard to lose weight.  Use a calorie calculator to find out how many calories you should consume. The calorie amount will be based on your age, gender, weight, height and exercise level.  Once they determine the amount of calories you need, stick with it.  You will feel more energetic throughout the day and lighter on the scale.

12. You’re Gaining Muscle and Losing Inches

Often, people stop losing weight because they are gaining muscle.  This is a positive change, so people should not be disappointed. Instead of only relying on the scale, take out the measuring tape, too. You might find that your mid section is leaner and your arms are smaller, even though the scale says you weigh the same as you did last week.
